Haifa
The 3rd largest city in Israel, Haifa is home to approximately 267,800 people. (following Jerusalem and Tel Aviv) In Talmudic literature the city was first mentioned around 400 CE and was described as a small town in close proximity to Shikmona; it was not until 1868 when German Templers arrived that the city would be modernized and shaped into a center of commerce. Its vast expanse of clustered suburbs and bustling city streets makes it a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed. The city of Haifa is built over a great portion of the Carmel mountains, which provides for spectacular views of surrounding land from lookout points and a glorious view of the ocean which culminates in the city's vital, busy port.
The cultural scene in Haifa although not as big or popular as that of Tel Aviv is still evident and there are many places to experience artwork, lively entertainment and active nightlife.
Many famous landmarks with a lush history are situated in Haifa; from the awe inspiring, immaculately kept Bahai Gardens to the Technion (a world class university). Longstanding industry within the city continues to grow with major world corporations situating their Israeli headquarters around Haifa. The conurbation is also in very close proximity to the religious sites such as the 'The Cave of Elijah' which is believed by Jews to be the residence of the profit Elijah and his young apprentice Elisha. Nearby at the highest point in the Carmel mountains is supposedly the same location that the bible notes as the place where Elijah confronted hundreds of Priests of the Baal Merqat.
The plethora of locales with historical and biblical significance makes Haifa a popular tourist destination for not only foreign visitors but Israeli citizens themselves. With such an influx of sightseers to the city the area has an overwhelming atmosphere that is an experience in itself.
